ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An Erbil medical conference has become an important platform for medical research, attracting dozens of local and international doctors, organizers and participants said at the annual event.

The Medical Kurdistan conference is an annual conference that "welcomes all scientists, clinicians, students, health allied staff, researchers, and professionals from Iraq and all over the world to submit their research findings and meet to discuss recent advances and innovations in all branches of clinical and preclinical medical sciences," according to its website. It is organized by the School of Medicine at the University of Kurdistan - Hewler (UKH).

"The conference is divided into seven sections, each dedicated to the field of medical sciences," Tishk Nuri Shaways, president of Medical Kurdistan, told Rudaw's Horvan Rafaat on Thursday. Over 90 doctors practicing in a range of specialties participated.

"A large number of papers were presented on different topics. The conference is a good initiative to encourage scientific research, especially in medicine. This is a good development of relations between Kurdish doctors and doctors from other countries," said Sonia Hammami, a doctor from Tunisia with over 30 years of experience.

Several UKH students also presented their research and 20 local and international companies showcased their latest medical equipment.

"Organizing such conferences is very important for us students because it gives us the opportunity to talk and show our research to our doctor  and teachers and discuss it," said Bahoz Aziz, a third-year medical student at UKH.
