ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday discussed recent regional developments following a joint US-Israel attack on Iran during a phone call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
“The phone call centered on recent developments across the region, with both parties underscoring the critical importance of joint efforts to preserve regional peace and stability,” a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency said.
The statement added that President Barzani and Fidan also discussed Turkey’s ties with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as a range of other issues of mutual concern.
The call comes as a major war between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other has engulfed the region, with significant repercussions, including for the Kurdistan Region.
Kurdistan Region, especially Erbil, has come under numerous drone and missile attacks by Iran and its proxies in Iraq.
“Around 100 drones and missiles have been used in the attacks,” Erbil Governor Omed Xoshnaw told Rudaw on Tuesday.
Khoshnaw added that an “advanced” defense system has been deployed, intercepting all incoming projectiles before they could reach their intended ground targets.
