ISIS lashes out at Peshmerga on multiple fronts, two Peshmerga wounded
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Islamic State (ISIS) fighters lashed out on multiple war fronts against Peshmerga forces on Tuesday, wounding at least two Kurdish soldiers in car bombings and suffering casualties themselves.
“ISIS launched multiple attacks on Peshmerga frontlines, including on the Bashik front,” said Hameed Afandy, the Peshmerga commander on the front.
He said that a pair of car bombings on the Bashik front had wounded two Kurdish soldiers.
ISIS has staged frequent but failed assaults to try to break through Peshmerga lines at Bashik. On Saturday, two Peshmerga soldiers and seven militants were killed in another failed ISIS offensive in Bashik.
In Tel Skuf, two ISIS suicide attackers detonated their explosives but failed to inflict Peshmerga casualties. On the Khazir front, fighting was ongoing for more than three hours. The US coalition provided air support to the Peshmerga on the ground, and 15 ISIS corpses were retrieved by the Peshmerga, military officials said.
“A massive number of ISIS militants held a pre-dawn assault on Peshmerga defense lines and so far the fighting is ongoing in Wardak village,” a Peshmerga official said. He said there are casualties on the ISIS side that have yet to be announced.
“ISIS aims to take over the heights of Wardak due to its strategic position and they have lit huge fires so that thick smoke will thwart Peshmerga and coalition airstrikes,” he said. “The Peshmerga are only 400 meters from ISIS.”
