PUK slams deadly celebratory gunfire that marred Salih election
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) condemned deadly bursts of celebratory gunfire that some used to welcome the election of President Barham Salih.
At least two people were killed in Sulaimani and Chamchamal when revelers shot into the air after Salih was elected on Tuesday night.
"Despite developments in Kurdish society, unfortunately, some people are still resorting to shooting to celebrate and express their happiness," read a PUK politburo statement Wednesday evening.
"While we are condemning this uncivilized trend that frequently causes human and material losses, we call on the relevant security institutions to set up a committee to take tough measures against those who are shooting,” the statement added.
The party extended their condolences to the families of the two who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to those who were wounded.
"We are willing to assist the relevant authorities to punish the perpetrators," the PUK stated.
