ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - UAE-based Dana Gas announced on Wednesday that production at the Khor Mor gas field in the Kurdistan Region has returned to normal levels following last week’s attack, notably highlighting “strengthened security measures” implemented by Kurdish and federal authorities to safeguard the key facility.

In a statement, the Sharjah-headquartered firm said production at Khor Mor “has been restored to normal levels following the recent attack,” affirming that “this resumption follows strengthened security measures implemented by the Kurdistan Regional Government [KRG] and the federal authorities, to whom we extend our thanks.”

However, the prominent energy firm offered no further details on the measures in reference.

“Dana Gas and its partners remain committed to the safety of their personnel and facilities, as well as supporting electricity generation and LPG supply for the people of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” the statement concluded.

The UAE-based energy firm, together with its affiliate Crescent Petroleum, is a joint operator and major shareholder in Pearl Petroleum, the consortium leading the development and production of the Khor Mor gas facility.

Located in the Chamchamal district of the Kurdistan Region’s eastern Sulaimani province, the Khor Mor gas field came under attack on Wednesday.

Dana Gas reported on Thursday that production at the facility had been suspended after “a liquid storage tank” was struck, adding that “there were no injuries to personnel.” The firm said it initiated a temporary shutdown “to extinguish the fire and conduct a situation assessment.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani and Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday agreed to form a joint investigative committee "to identify and arrest the attackers and bring them to justice."

In the aftermath of the attack, Kurdish officials intensified appeals for defense systems to protect critical facilities, including Khor Mor field which has been targeted at least eleven times between 2022 and 2025, including two incidents that caused significant human and material losses.

In a Thursday statement on X, Prime Minister Barzani called on “our American and international partners to provide the defensive equipment necessary to protect our civilian infrastructure, and to support us in taking serious action to deter these attacks on our people and our progress.”

In a Tuesday interview with Rudaw, the KRG’s Representative to the US, Trifa Aziz, asserted that acquiring anti-drone defense systems will top Erbil’s agenda in the coming period.

“We are looking for the United States government to provide the Kurdistan Region with anti-drone equipment,” she said, adding that “these defensive systems will help us protect our Region from attacks.”
