12-year-old girl in Erbil’s Soran undergoes anotia surgery
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - In the first surgery of its kind in the area, tissue from body parts of a 12-year-old girl born with one ear was used to create a bioprosthetic ear earlier this week.
“Ravin has had the same condition since birth, she was born with one ear. We went to many doctors until we finally visited Dr. Kadhim [Kakawais] and he told us ‘Bring her and God willing we will do the surgery,’’ Mohammed Ahmed, Ravin's father, told Rudaw.
The procedure consists of using costal cartilage to create a bioprosthetic ear. Despite the operation being quite challenging and requiring Kakawais’s collaboration with a team of other medical professionals, it was ultimately successful.
“Thank God the surgery ended successfully. In a few months, there will be another stage that will be easier than the surgery we just did. Hopefully, she will have a beautiful ear. So far everything has come along beautifully, according to plan,” said the surgeon.
Ravin's family gathered at the hospital to celebrate the surgery's success.
