ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least two people were injured in car accidents that involved nine vehicles on the Sulaimani-Chamchamal highway on Sunday, police confirmed to Rudaw.

"At around 9 am on the Takiya-Chamchamal [road] on the direction to Sulaimani, a car accident occurred. The reason behind the accident was a vehicle that had wanted to cross the road," said Omer Ali, in charge of Chamchamal traffic police.

Ali added due to the traffic violation, three vehicles collided, causing traffic congestion that led to the collision of another six vehicles.

"Two big vehicles, a transport truck, and a bus are among the colliding cars in the incident," he detailed.

"Two people who suffered minor injuries were rushed to the hospital," the head of the Chamchamal traffic said.

Sunday's accident comes a few weeks after six people lost their lives when a car lost control and crashed into a truck in Kirkuk.

Car accidents are a common occurrence in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, where years of war, neglect, and corruption have affected its infrastructure. Roads are often riddled with potholes and lack proper illumination, making it difficult to see when driving at night.

At least 40 people were injured and several were killed in a devastating traffic accident last month in Iraq’s southern Basra province during the million-person Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
