ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An unidentified drone targeted a base of the Shingal Resistance Units (YBS) on Thursday, an official confirmed to Rudaw, saying the attack resulted in material and immaterial damage.

Mahma Khalil, a Shingal MP in the Iraqi parliament, told Rudaw's Nahro Mohammed that the drone strike targeted a YBS base on Mount Shingal, adding that the extent of the damage remains to be determined.

The Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said in a statement that Turkish warplanes bombarded the YBS base at 9:30PM, “resulting in casualties and injuries,” without specifying the number.

Rojnews, a media outlet affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), said that the drone targeted the Sardasht camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) at 8:15PM, without providing any further information.

The YBS controlled parts of Shingal months after it was invaded by the Islamic State (ISIS) militants in summer 2014

Ankara occasionally carries out such attacks against the YBS in Shingal where several armed forces affiliated with the Iraqi government, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the PKK, and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) are present.

Turkey considers the YBS to be an offshoot of the PKK, an armed group fighting for the enhanced rights of Kurds in Turkey. The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara, which carries out regular military campaigns against the group at home and in northern Iraq, including in the Kurdistan Region.

At least one person was killed and 10 others were injured when a suspected Turkish drone targeted the YBS headquarters in Snune sub-district in June.
