Iran launches fresh drone strikes on Kurdish opposition group in Kurdistan Region

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a new drone attack targeting a Kurdish opposition group in the Kurdistan Region, the dissident group said in a Thursday statement, despite reports that the United States and Iran are inching closer to an understanding that could end the regional war and pave the way for broader nuclear negotiations.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) reported that “at 23:10 local time on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, three drones struck the Zewi Aspi base of the KDPI” in Koya district southeast of Erbil, noting that the incident marked “the second attack on PDKI bases in the same day.”

Iran had earlier in the day carried out two drone strikes on “the PDKI families’ camp at Girde Chal” near Erbil, the statement added, describing the site as “a residential camp housing the spouses, children, and elderly relatives of KDPI members.”

Iran’s continued targeting of opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region comes as US officials reportedly said Washington is close to agreeing on a one-page memorandum of understanding with Tehran to end the war and launch broader nuclear talks, according to a Wednesday report by the American website Axios.

Iranian foreign ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the same day that “the US plan and proposal are still under review by Iran,” according to the state-affiliated Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA), adding that Tehran will convey its position to the Pakistani side once the assessment is complete.

For his part, US President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that Washington could resume bombing Iranian targets if no agreement is reached.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Iranian attacks on positions in the Kurdistan Region have continued since a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire between Iran and the US came into effect on April 8. While the truce reduced large-scale hostilities, lower-level attacks have persisted, particularly in the Kurdistan Region.

According to the KDPI statement, “Iran has attacked PDKI bases 119 times since late February,” marking the outbreak of the six-week war.

Over the course of the war, hundreds of drones and missiles have struck the Region, with Kurdish authorities reporting more than 800 attacks between late February and April 20. Officials say at least 20 people have been killed and more than 120 injured.

Kurdish authorities have repeatedly stressed that the Kurdistan Region is not a party to the conflict, while Iranian officials maintain that Kurdish opposition groups pose a security threat - a claim that has continued to fuel cross-border strikes.
