KRG, WHO launch COVID-19 awareness and prevention campaign

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), launched a coronavirus awareness and prevention campaign on Saturday, as the virus continues to be reported in high numbers in the autonomous region.

“The public should have a complete understanding of their health during infection, how to deal with their surroundings, how to practice self-isolation and, most importantly, visit the coronavirus centers," said KRG Minister of Health Saman Hussein at a Saturday press conference launching the campaign in Erbil.

The minister stressed the importance of taking COVID-19 testing, encouraging members of the public to take on the responsibility of identifying the virus and following proper health instructions.

Under the five-day campaign’s slogan "your health is your responsibility," a number of teams from the WHO will be handing out masks, brochures and posters in the cities of Erbil, Duhok and Sulaimani.

Erbil governor Hemin Qadir asked citizens to continue assisting the officials during the third wave of the virus, to "get out of this safe."

The KRG recorded 771 new cases on Saturday, including 392 recoveries and 21 deaths, according to data published by the Ministry of Health. There are now 28,667 active cases in the Kurdistan Region.

"We need to be all working together to protect ourselves, protecting yourself does not mean only you but also people who are around you, so please let's work together, let's try to stop the spread of the virus, and we are all responsible at this point in time" said Wael Hatahit, head the WHO's Iraq emergency department at Saturday’s press conference.
