Saudi Arabia plans to open consulate in Erbil

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Saudi Arabia is reportedly set to join the host of other nations who have consulates in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region's capital Erbil.

This is according to the Saudi ambassador to Iraq Thamer al-Sabhan who said, according to Anadolu, on Sunday that in addition to opening an embassy in Baghdad Riyadh "will also open a consulate in Erbil."

Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani made an official state visit to Saudi Arabia last December where they discussed how to enhance bilateral ties.

Riyadh is seeking to reestablish an embassy in Baghdad over closing its last one 25 years ago when Iraq under Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990.
In early January Saudi Arabia and Iran severed ties after an Iranian mob ransacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran following Riyadh's execution of the Saudi Shiite Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.
