Qassem Soleimani sends condolences in call with KRG PM Barzani
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp’s (IRGC) extraterritorial Quds Force, expressed his condolences in a call with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani on Sunday following the death of the PM’s twin brother Dilovan Barzani.
“In a telephone call on Sunday evening, Mr. Soleimani, besides expressing sympathy and condolences, expressed that he shares the grief for the passing of the deceased Dilovan Idris Barzani, and he told Mr. Nechirvan Barzani he hopes that this will be their last grief,” read a statement published by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The KRG prime minister thanked the general for the call and his condolences.
Dilovan Idris Barzani, 51, died of a heart attack in Erbil on Monday.
Soleimani is accused of leading Shiite militia groups in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. He was reportedly seen in Kirkuk among Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi militias following the city’s fall in October last year.
Media and officials said Soleimani led the Iraqi militias in the retaking of the oil-rich province from Kurdish forces.
