Five workers injured after Sulaimani building collapse

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Five workers were injured on Wednesday after an unfinished building collapsed in Sulaimani city, according to local authorities.

Chalak Rauf, the head of Kurdistan Workers’ Syndicate’s Sulaimani branch, told Rudaw on Wednesday that the roof of an unfinished building collapsed in the city while workers were applying concrete to the roof.

Saman Nadir, the head of Sulaimani health directorate’s emergency unit, said five workers were injured in the incident, adding that their conditions are stable.

According to data from the syndicate, 30 workers died and 24 others were injured in the first eight months of this year. Most of the casualties were from Sulaimani province.

Many companies do not sign contracts with their employees, a way to avoid installing safety measures. Workers who suffer accidents often lose their source of income.

Four Sudanese workers who had been living at an unfinished project in Erbil for ten years and were unable to return to their country due to unpaid salaries, last month urged the Kurdistan Region’s relevant authorities to resolve the issue.

Two of the six workers died at the unfinished workplace without ever receiving their salaries.
