ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region’s education minister on Monday announced a ten-day New Year holiday for schools.

Alan Hamasaeed told Rudaw that the holiday starts on December 25 and ends on January 3. “Regular classes and the second semester will begin on January 4."

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has not yet officially announced the New Year holiday for all institutions, but it is expected to be similar to the one announced by the minister.

Each year in the Kurdistan Region, around 1.8 million students attend more than 7,000 schools, with 57 percent located in Erbil and Duhok and 43 percent in Sulaimani and Halabja.

"This year, 1,965,000 students are studying in private and public schools,” Hamasaeed told Rudaw on Monday.

The Iraqi government has yet to announce the New Year holiday for schools and other institutions.
