PUK forces shut down PKK-affiliated party office in Garmiyan: report
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Security forces in Garmiyan have arrested nine members of a pro-PKK party and shut down their office on Wednesday, according to media close to the party.
Asayesh (Kurdish security forces) of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) raided a centre of Tavgari Azadi (Kurdistan Free Society Movement), arresting nine members and forcing the closure of the centre, Roj News reported.
Late last year, KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, senior member of the PUK, ordered Tavgari Azadi offices closed in the province. Tavgari Azadi has a party license from Baghdad, but its application for a license from Erbil has not been processed, it said last November.
It is not immediately clear if the closure of the office in Garmiyan was related to this crackdown.
Members of Martyr Guevara Garmiyani Academy, affiliated with Tavgari Azadi, were informed in the afternoon to report to Asayesh who later entered the building, arrested the centre members, and closed it, according to Roj News.
The cultural and educational academy was founded four years ago, according to media reports.
