Major of the Peshmerga bomb defusal team killed on Khazir front

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A member of the Peshmerga bomb disposal team was killed on Khazir front on Tuesday, a Peshmerga spokesperson confirmed.

“On Tuesday, August 9, while defusing mines, Major Peshkavt Akrye, an officer of the mine defusing team, was killed as one of the mines exploded near him,” Nezar Mamah, a Peshmerga spokesperson on the Khazir front told Rudaw.

34-year old Major Peshkavt Akrye was born in 1982; he leaves behind his wife and four children.

Omid Welati, spokesperson for Unit 1 of the Peshmerga reinforcement forces, told Rudaw that Akrye was in Tola Band on the Khazir front, 60 kilometres west of Erbil, defusing mines planted by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in the village.

“A bomb was exploded at 12:00 pm and he [Akrye] was martyred,” Welati said.

Another two Peshmerga commanders were killed on the Khazir front by an ISIS mortar shell attack last July.

Kurdish Peshmerga recaptured nine villages from ISIS on the Khazir front in an offensive launched in May.
