Unidentified drone targets Sulaimani village, sparks fire: Official
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An unidentified drone on Saturday bombarded the vicinity of a village in Sulaimani province’s Mawat town, causing a fire in the mountainous area. No casualties have been reported, a local official said.
Kamaran Hassan, mayor of Mawat, told Rudaw’s Horvan Rafaat that a drone hit the vicinity of Basawe village in the district at 09:10 am but did not cause casualties.
“The bombardment took place only one kilometre away from the populated areas of the village, hitting a mountainous target,” said the mayor, adding that the attack was carried out by a drone.
The bombardment sparked a fire near the village and the blaze is yet to be controlled, he noted.
“Drones and surveillance planes fly over our district and Sharbazher every day, terrifying the residents of the region,” the local official said.
Turkish air forces bombarded several areas in Sulaimani province last week, damaging the orchards and farms of villagers.
In a recent escalation of its activity in Sulaimani province, Ankara has carried out drone attacks on busy roads that link major urban centres, leading to civilian deaths.
