Swedish Kurds talk diaspora support for referendum with Barzani

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – President Masoud Barzani met on Thursday with a Kurdish group from Sweden and discussed activities within the diaspora regarding advocacy for the September 25 independence referendum.

Kurds in the diaspora originating from all four parts of greater Kurdistan (Kurdish regions in Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria) support the Kurdistan Region’s referendum and independence process, Kaya Ezol, president of Federation of the Kurdistani Groups in Sweden, told Barzani, according to a statement from the presidency.

Ezol said his group intends to hold activities in the Swedish parliament, organize demonstrations in Sweden, and bring international observers to monitor the vote.

Barzani expressed his gratitude to Ezol’s group and stressed that the goal of the referendum is independence from Iraq because of the failure of the partnership between Kurdistan and Iraq.
