Local beekeepers in Sulaimani complain about imported honey
SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region - Local beekeepers are worried that there is less demand for their produce because of the foreign honey products being imported into the Kurdistan Region.
Abdullah Ibrahim has been a beekeeper for 30 years and he claims that his honey sales have decreased by 80 percent.
“No matter how much honey we produce, it will not get sold, because there is so much imported honey that comes from Iran, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia and they do not put a limit on the market,” Ibrahim told Rudaw's Nizar Jaza.
Local honey products differ from one another when it comes to pricing, depending on the quality of the product.
The prices range all the way from 25,000 Iraqi Dinars ($17) to 250,000 Iraqi Dinars ($172).
The Kurdistan Region Beekeepers Association calls for a ban on importing honey.
The honey production in the Kurdistan Region in 2022 was 1,600 tons, which is twice as much as in 2021, so beekeepers demand to find a market to sell their honey and prevent the import of honey.
Customers complain that local honey is highly priced and opt for the cheaper imported product, causing local producers to run at a loss.
