Famous restaurant catches fire in Erbil, no casualties
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - One of the branches of Erbil city’s famous Top Organic restaurant caught fire early Saturday, with initial reports indicating that the blaze originated from the kitchen. No casualties have been reported but the restaurant was completely burnt, according to the civil defence department spokesperson.
This branch of the restaurant is located inside Cristal Hotel on the 100-metre road.
Sarkawt Karash, spokesperson for Erbil’s civil defence department, told reporters that the blaze started at 7:50 am. The restaurant usually serves breakfast during this time. However, the fire only caused material damage, according to Karash.
“The restaurant was completely burnt but there were no casualties. There was only material damage. The hotel is not affected,” he said.
“As per the initial investigation, the fire originated from the kitchen. The blaze later spread [to other parts of the restaurant],” added Karash.
He noted that the restaurant was mostly made of materials like wood, making it easy for the fire to spread quickly.
It took 12 firefighting teams more than three hours to bring the blaze under control.
The fire was so huge that people from outside Erbil city shared videos of thick plums of smoke billowing into the skies of Erbil, pouring out from the restaurant.
