Kurdistan Region hit by nearly 300 drones, missiles in two weeks of war

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region has been targeted by 294 drones and missiles during two weeks of war involving Israel and the United States against Iran, killing six people and wounding 35 others, according to monitoring by Rudaw.

Drone and missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region continued on Friday, with at least two people injured in a series of strikes in Erbil province after a Peshmerga force came under attack near the Hawraza Nafta area, a few miles east of Erbil city.

“Two drones and a missile targeted our headquarters at around 2:00 pm today,” Abdullah Hama Rashid, head of the Peshmerga force’s operations, told Rudaw. “Two of our members were injured but are in good condition.”

Around five missiles struck Azadi Camp in Erbil’s Koya district, a facility that houses members and families of the Iranian Kurdish opposition Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI).

At around noon, two drones also struck KDPI positions in the Akoyan Valley in Erbil province. A party official told Rudaw the attack was carried out by Iran but caused no casualties.

Another drone strike targeted the Saraw area of Koya later on Friday.

According to Rudaw’s monitoring, a total of 294 drones and missiles have struck the Kurdistan Region since February 28, up to 4:00 pm on Friday. Of these, 247 targeted Erbil province, 41 struck Sulaimani province, four hit Duhok province, and two landed in Halabja province.

Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw has said many of the projectiles were "intercepted and destroyed by air defense systems."

Overall toll

According to compiled statistics, six people have been killed and 35 others injured since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran on February 28.

Those killed include a security employee at Erbil International Airport, four Peshmerga fighters affiliated with Iranian Kurdish opposition parties - two in Erbil and two in Sulaimani province - and a French soldier killed in Erbil on Thursday.

Among the injured are three security personnel at Erbil International Airport, two guards at the former UN headquarters in Sulaimani, and a guard at the Titanic Hotel in Sulaimani.

Seven civilians were also wounded, including a delivery motorcyclist in Erbil, a resident of Bajd Kandala camp in Zakho, a nurse in Azadi Camp in Koya, three civilians from western Iran in Zawi Spi camp in Koya, and a child in the Qalawa neighborhood of Sulaimani.

Fourteen Peshmerga fighters and six French soldiers were also wounded in the attacks.
