ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region opposition leader Shaswar Abdulwahid was released on bail on Wednesday, Rudaw has learned.

Media affiliated with Abdulwahid also reported his release.

Abdulwahid, leader of Kurdistan Region of the New Generation Movement (NGM), was jailed by Sulaimani security forces in mid-August and was sentenced to five months over charges pertaining to making serious threats against others, their property, or their reputation.

The NGM, which is the biggest opposition in the Kurdistan Region, has labeled the leader's trial as political. The party performed poorly in Iraq’s parliamentary elections in November. His absence was believed to have contributed to the great loss of votes.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has also auctioned off many of his properties due to his failure to repay loans owed to the government.

Rudaw has learned that Abdulwahid faces other charges.

This is a developing story...
