Loud blast heard in Erbil after suspected drone falls
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A loud blast was heard in Erbil early Monday after a suspected drone fell down, reportedly intercepted by the new US consulate compound’s aerial defense system.
The suspected drone, which crashed down in northeast Erbil, near the new US consulate compound, was reportedly downed by the consulate’s aerial defense system.
Local authorities and the US mission in Erbil have yet to comment on the incident.
Kurdish security forces rushed to the crash site in the immediate aftermath of the blast.

No casualties were reported and security forces have cordoned the area for investigations.

On Sunday, another suspected drone was reportedly downed over Erbil by US forces.
This comes amid exchange of attacks between Israel and Iran. The conflict started on Friday when Israel carried out deadly airstrikes against Iranian military and nuclear sites, triggering a response from Tehran. Several Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists have been killed.
