ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Rwanga Foundation and the Kurdistan Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (KMCF) on Thursday signed an agreement to develop the mountaineering sector in the Kurdistan Region, including plans for a camp to host mountaineers and tourists.

“We are trying to create a modern mountaineering camp to host those tourists and mountaineers who daily want to practice their sport through the Mountaineering Federation,” Hassan Sheikh Alaaldin, executive president of the Rwanga Foundation, said after signing the deal in Erbil.

They will also collaborate on developing a mobile app.

“We are coordinating to create an advanced app that contains all information related to mountainous areas, so that mountaineers can easily access the locations,” Alaaldin said.

The KMCF was founded in 2006 with the goal of building the infrastructure to develop mountaineering and climbing in the Kurdistan Region.

“The Rwanga Foundation has complete confidence in the activities of the Mountaineering Federation, and in the future, for the purpose of keeping the mountaineering culture alive in Kurdistan, we consider the existence of this federation necessary,” said Alaaldin.

The two have previously collaborated on the renovation of KMCF’s Erbil headquarters.

The Kurdistan Region is a predominantly mountainous area, with several prominent ranges.
