ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A group of Kurdish mountaineers climbed the mountains of Choman district of Erbil province on Friday to visit Fellaw Pond which provides a respite from the noise of urban areas with its charming view.
The visiting mountaineers were members of the Sulaimani Mountaineering Group.
"We have brought a lot of gundelia with us, but we thought this type of plant was very special because we picked the plant ourselves [here]. It is part of this nature. It is very beautiful,” mountaineer Shno Ahmed told Rudaw.
They chose to visit the popular spot during the holy month of Ramadan to break their fast in the evening while surrounded by the view of nature.
"We would by now have eaten other meals unless it was the month of Ramadan. We have continued our hiking trips in the month of Ramadan as well as the Sulaimani Mountaineering Group. However, this trip is different from those of other times,” mountaineer Zhino Rafiq said.
Fellaw Pond is 1,785 meters above sea level and is situated in the mountains of the town of Choman in the Ballakayaty area close to the Iraq-Iran border.
Local springs and melting snow makes up the pond which attracts tourists in the summer.
Temperature degrees around the pond plummet to 5 degrees Celsius during the night time.
As the sun sets, a myriad of frogs in the pond start to trill and croak, welcoming a new night while the visitors start to break their fast.
The mountaineers spend the night in the freezing weather listening to traditional music.
