ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday received Hungary’s outgoing Consul General Attila Toth in Erbil to thank him for his service and Hungary’s continued support to the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

“Today we welcomed His Excellency Attila Toth, Consul General of Hungary in the Kurdistan Region, on the occasion of the conclusion of his diplomatic mission in the Region,” Barzani said in a Facebook post. “We thanked the Hungarian Consul General and wished him success in his future duties.”

Toth expressed his appreciation for the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) coordination and support during his tenure, according to Barzani.

Hungary began training Kurdish Peshmerga forces in 2021 after the global coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) ended its combat mission in Iraq and shifted to advising, training, and intelligence support.

As a member of the anti-ISIS coalition, Hungary has provided millions of rounds of ammunition and medical support to the Peshmerga and continues to assist through its military advisors.

The coalition was formed in 2014 after ISIS seized large parts of Iraq and Syria in a brazen offensive, and played a hey role in helping territorially defeat the militant group by 2017, supporting local forces like the Peshmerga with training, airstrikes, and aid.
