Arrested in Erbil counterfeit currency sting includes European passport holder

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Five people have been arrested and one million counterfeit US dollars seized in a police operation in Erbil. One of the arrested “holds a European passport.”

“On February 6, 2017, our Directorate in coordination with the General Directorate of Preventing Organized Crimes which is part of the Parastin Agency, seized 1 million counterfeit United States dollars in the suburbs of the city of Erbil, and arrested five people in connection with this; one of them holds a European passport. Their intention was to sell the money in Erbil,” reads a statement released on Thursday by the Directorate General of Preventing Illegal Drugs.

The nationality of the European passport holder detained was not provided. 

In a second operation this week east of Erbil, the directorate seized teriak, which is a pure form of opium, and hashish.

“In an operation conducted by the Office for Preventing Illegal Drugs in the city of Soran, which is part of our directorate, on February 13, 2017, 13 kilos of teriak and 1 kilo of hashish were seized in Soran while deals were being negotiated. Three people were arrested in connection with these illicit dealings. Their cases have now been referred to the court for legal proceedings,” the statement added.
