Kurdistan parliament honors former speaker

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Parliament has lowered its flag to commemorate the death of Dr. Kamal Fuad, former speaker of parliament, and one of the co-founders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party (PUK).

Fuad was born in the city of Sulaimani in 1932, and received his education at Humboldt University in Germany, earning a doctorate in philosophy. 

The Kurdistan parliament issued a statement saying: To honor and respect the work and services of the late speaker of parliament, the Kurdistan parliament presidency has decided to lower its flag.”

Fuad was appointed as the head of the PUK bloc during the first term of the Kurdistan parliament, which was established in 1991. He was among the 59 MPs who went on strike to protest against the civil war, the statement said.

“He was always a champion of brotherhood, unity and protection of the people,” it added. “He played a prominent role in unifying the Kurdish parliament in 1998 towards the peace-process in the Kurdistan region.”
