ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region's interior ministry on Wednesday announced the KRDPass digital identity application is set to provide electronic driver license access to residents and lay the groundwork for paying traffic fines online as part of a broader push to digitize public services.
The interior ministry said in a statement that the KRDPass application is now available on both Android and Apple platforms. Hemin Mirany, chief of staff to the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) interior ministry, told Rudaw on Wednesday that citizens who complete biometric registration can use the application, adding that “in the future, they will be able to pay traffic fines through it without the need for in-person visits [to the traffic directorate].”
KRDPass is the official digital identity application developed by the KRG to provide residents with a unified electronic identifier for government and private-sector transactions. The app functions as a digital wallet, allowing users to store official documents and use biometric verification to access services such as salary tracking and online document submission.
According to the ministry, drivers who hold the new digital driver’s licenses can now access a full electronic copy of their license through the application. All relevant details, including license information and a digital version of the document, are available within the app, allowing drivers to present proof of licensing directly from their mobile devices.
According to the ministry, when interacting with traffic police “You can show the digital copy of your license on the aforementioned application and pass without any issues.”
Mirany noted that “residents can currently only view their fines, but in the future, the payment feature via ‘e-Psule’ will be activated.”
The launch of KRDPass is part of a broader government effort to digitize public services and reduce reliance on cash transactions and paper-based procedures. Last week, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated a new digital payment platform known as e-Psule, meaning “bill” in Kurdish.
The platform allows citizens to pay government bills electronically through participating banks and has been approved by the Central Bank of Iraq, with Deloitte appointed to audit its payment processes.
