Suicide drone downed in Erbil

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A suicide drone was downed in southern Erbil on Wednesday, Kurdish counterterrorism forces said. 

The Erbil-based Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said in a Facebook post that the drone was downed near Sherawa village south of Erbil at 6:43 pm without specifying who was responsible for intercepting it.

“Fortunately, it did not cause any material damage or casualties,” CTD added. 

The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Kurdistan Region has been largely impacted by the tensions but several suspected drones have been downed in Erbil since the conflict escalated on Friday.

The Kurdistan Region Presidency on Friday called for a peaceful solution of the conflict and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) convened on Wednesday to discuss the tensions. 

The KRG reiterated its commitment to serving as a stabilizing force in the region, rather than posing a threat to its neighbors.
