Peshmerga freed from ISIS taken to hospital
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Saed Ahmed Omer, the Peshmerga freed from ISIS captivity last weekend, was diagnosed with exhaustion after becoming ill Monday night.
“My brother, Saed Ahmed, three days after he was freed, became ill on Monday night and we took him to Soran hospital,” his brother Hasan Ahmed Surchi told Rudaw.
“The doctors examined him and told us he was exhausted and needed to rest. They said he should avoid crowded places until his health improves. We have now taken him home, but people want to see him and are therefore visiting him.”
Omer, who is deaf, was tortured by ISIS during the nearly two months he was held by the group, his brother said. ISIS militants tied him to a tree and tortured him to make him speak. They thought he was feigning being mute.
“Although my brother has been freed from ISIS, fear of ISIS still haunts him. He is in disbelief that he is freed,” Surchi said.
Omer, a Peshmerga with 14 years of service, was taken captive on May 28 during an overnight ISIS attack on Peshmerga near Tuz Khurmatu. Six Peshmerga were wounded in the attack.
He was freed by counter-terror forces on July 15.
He is the father of five children.
