ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Five people of Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province were killed in southeast Turkey’s Kurdish-majority city of Mardin on Thursday, with the governor of the city announcing the arrest of four people suspected of being involved in the shooting.

“The victims belong to two families, one is a 63-year-old mother and his son Ahmad, and the other is the car’s driver with his wife and daughter,” Amin Abdullah, son of one of the victims told Rudaw, adding that they are currently conducting the legal procedures to bring their bodies to Duhok for burial.

The victims of one of the families were visiting Mardin for medical treatment, according to their relatives, when they were shot “in the head” inside their car in the early morning of Thursday.

The governor’s office in Mardin announced that four people have been arrested as suspects in the incident, adding that further investigation in the shooting continues “meticulously.”

Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani extended his condolences to the families involved.

“As we strongly condemn this crime, we ask of the Turkish government to reveal the causes behind this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice,” read a statement from PM Barzani.

Ahmed al-Sahaf, spokesperson for Iraq's foreign ministry, told reporters that Iraq’s diplomatic missions in Turkey are working closely with the relevant authorities to determine the “motives and details” of the incident.
