Kurdistan Ice and snow festival opens tomorrow

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—An ice and snow festival will be held on Saturday in the mountainous region of Haji Omaran, near the Kurdistan Region’s border with Iran.

Barzan Mohammad, one of the event’s organizers, told Rudaw English on Friday that at least 40 to 50 people are planned to participate in activities which include snow play and climbing mountains.

Participants have applied from the region’s three provinces: Duhok, Sulimani and Erbil. A group of Kurdish youth from Iranian Kurdistan will also join the event, Mohammad said.

The one-day winter event, according to Mohammad, “intends to draw attention from all around the world to the beautiful nature of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.”

“They have been training for two days now and everything is ready,” he added.

This is the second winter festival to be held in that area. The first one was held in the 1950s.

The Center of Youth and Culture in the towns of Choman and Soran organized the event, which starts at 10.30am.
