Mount Halgurd, some 170 kilometers north of the Kurdistan Region capital of Erbil, forms part of the Zagros mountain range on the Iran-Iraq border.
At 3,607 meters above sea level, its peak - the highest in Iraq - is snow-capped all year round. Its foothills are home to clean springs and meadows.
Local and foreign tourists and mountaineering groups climb and camp upon Halgurd for a spectacular natural view.
The Voice and Color of Kurdistan’s Nature group visited the mountain on Friday, embarking on an eight-hour climb from Halgurd's foothills to its peak.
The mountain was planted with mines during the eight-year war between Iraq and Iran in the 1980s, making some climb routes hazardous.
