First animal emergency ambulance launched in Sulaimani

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region - The first stray animal ambulance was launched in Sulaimani, operated by a number of volunteers to treat the animals they find.

The ambulance is made up of a minibus divided into two parts, the cooler department and the medical department.

It is the first such initiative in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

“I divided the minibus into two parts, one side is the cooler and the other is for medication,” Arya Zakiri, the owner of the ambulance told Rudaw’s Arkan Ali last week. “We are the first who brought this ambulance across the Region and to Iraq,” he added.

The animal-friendly team takes care of the dogs and provides them with as much food as they can afford to buy, in addition to providing medical treatment.

Stray animals are in danger of being beaten up on the streets.

The number of animal protection groups and organizations has increased in the past 10 years, but they also complain that their fragmentation and lack of unity is the reason the dissatisfaction with the living conditions of stray animals.

The ambulance cost around $1,800 and up to 15 people are involved, according to Shaso Hemin, a member of the Hana Charity Foundation that provides for orphans as well as animals.

Stray dogs are often considered a danger and a public health issue in the Kurdistan Region. They are often shooed away, beaten, hit with sticks, and killed by cars.
