ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday received Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), emphasizing unity of Kurds in Syria.
“In their meeting, they discussed the Kurdish question and the situation of other communities in Syria. They also exchanged views on the SDF’s dialogue with Damascus, as well as the threats and dangers of terrorism and the resurgence of ISIS [Islamic State],” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
President Barzani “emphasized the necessity of unity among the Kurdish sides and resolving their issues through dialogue and understanding, in order to protect the rights of the Kurdish people in Syria,” added the statement.
Abdi arrived in Duhok city on Tuesday to attend the Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) forum. He also delivered a speech at the event the following day, during which he praised the role of the Kurdistan Region in efforts encouraging Syria’s Kurds to resolve their issues with Damascus through peaceful means.
During his meeting with President Barzani on Wednesday, Abdi reaffirmed his appreciation for the president of Kurdistan Region’s “support for the rights of the Kurdish people in Syria and his efforts toward resolving issues with Damascus.”
President Barzani has repeatedly called on Syria’s Kurds to go to Damascus and engage with the new authorities.
“Mazloum Abdi and the forces that have allied with him have played a great role in the fight against terrorism and [establishing] peace and stability in Syria,” President Barzani said during a panel at MEPS.
“In their meeting, they discussed the Kurdish question and the situation of other communities in Syria.
