Three detained in Sulaimani for attempted archaeological looting

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Three people were detained under suspicion of trying to find and loot archaeological sites in Sulaimani province, security forces (Asayish) announced on Friday. If convicted, they could face up to three years in jail.

Sulaimani Asayish carried out an “intense inspection and investigation” into three people who were trying to find archeological sites in Warmawa subdistrict.

“We detained them and confiscated a number of detection devices that they were planning to use to search for, find and extract [the sites],” read the statement.

Salam Abdulkhaliq, head of the Asayish media team, told Rudaw that the suspects are all from Halabja province.

“They failed to find any archaeological sites and were only in possession of detection devices,” he added.

If convicted, the suspects could be jailed for a maximum of three years. If they are civil servants, their prison term could be extended to up to 15 years.
