ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Masoud Barzani, president of Kurdistan Region’s governing Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), on Tuesday received a delegation from northeast Syria’s (Rojava) main opposition umbrella group following his meeting with chief of Rojava’s de facto army to discuss Kurdish unity.

“During the meeting, they discussed the political and security situation in Syria and the outcomes of dialogue and rapprochement among the Kurdish parties in Syria,” read a statement from Barzani’s office.

The Kurdish National Congress (ENKS/KNC) delegation consisted of the coalition’s chairman and leadership members.

The statement added that both sides also touched on the historic meeting between Barzani and Mazloum Abdi, chief of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in Erbil on Friday.

SDF is the de facto army of the Kurdish-held Rojava.

“Barzani emphasized the importance of unity, coordination, and joint work among the Kurdish parties in Syria,” read the statement from his office on Tuesday.

ENKS is a coalition of Rojava’s opposition parties that have close ties with the KDP.

Rojava’s ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the ENKS signed a historic agreement, mediated by the KDP leader, in Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province in 2015 to end tensions and share power in northeast Syria (Rojava), but the deal was never implemented. Each side blamed the other for its failure.

PYD-ENKS talks have been stalled for years due to disagreements.

Last month, Abdi met with an ENKS delegation, in the presence of the US-led global coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS), to discuss Kurdish unity going forward.
