ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The body of a man who went missing a week ago in Sulaimani’s Garmian administration was found in the Sirwan River on Saturday. The cause of death is under investigation.

Mahdi Mohammed, 25, a resident of Kalar, was last seen on Sunday heading toward the Sirwan River, according to his family. His body was discovered nearly a week later.

"Mahdi's body was found in the Sirwan River and is being sent to the forensic medicine [department]," Kalar Mayor Arif Adil told Rudaw. "As of now, it is not clear whether the incident was drowning, a crime, or what. It will become clear later when the forensic medicine [department] makes a decision about it."

Mahdi’s father, Mohammed Khalidi, told Rudaw on Thursday that "Around 4:35 pm, Mahdi went to a tea house in the market. A phone call came for him and he walked to the other side of Salih Agha's bridge where there is a checkpoint in front and a road branches off to the fish farm, and he went there. From there, he disappeared."

Mahdi, the eldest son in the family, was a fourth-year physics student at Garmian University. Peshmerga forces assisted in searching the area.
