ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on Friday carried out an attack on Turkish troops in the Kurdistan Region, killing three and injuring four others, Turkey’s defense ministry announced.

The ministry also said that it launched a retaliatory attack against the group in the area, “neutralizing” four PKK fighters. Turkey uses the term “neutralize” to denote adversaries captured, wounded, or killed.

The PKK has not immediately commented on the attack.

Turkey has recently increased its attacks on the PKK in the Kurdistan Region. It has also intensified its targeting Kurdish fighters in northern Syria due to their alleged ties with the PKK.

Kurdish civilians and rights organizations have criticized Turkey’s military campaign as civilian lives and property are frequently caught in the crossfire.

The Turkish defense ministry on Wednesday announced that it carried out airstrikes against 14 alleged positions of the PKK in the Kurdistan Region’s mountainous areas.
