More American companies 'eager' to invest in the Kurdistan Region: US top official
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The US deputy secretary of energy said that more American companies are willing to invest in the Kurdistan Region at a virtual conference late Monday.
Deputy secretary Mark Menezes told a virtual conference, attended by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and US officials and businessmen, that the Kurdistan Region has the “full potential” to recover from the economy’s downturn during the coronavirus pandemic.
“As we look to the future and to a full recovery from COVID-19, it is our hope that we can build on the momentum with Erbil and Baghdad to realize the full economic potential of the Kurdistan Region,” he said.
“The United States sees this potential and the American companies do as well. They are investing already and many more are eager to do likewise and ensure Kurdistan’s future,” added the US official.
Organized by the KRG representation in Washington DC and the US Chamber of Commerce’s US-Iraq Business Council, the online forum was entitled, Post-COVID-19 Economic Priorities in the Kurdistan Region.
Rudaw Media Network was the media sponsor of the two-hour virtual conference.
KRG PM Masrour Barzani told the conference that his cabinet welcomes foreign investment and is willing to facilitate the paperwork and other procedural matters for them as an incentive.
KRG “supports high quality foreign investment in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, particularly from the United States,” said Barzani.
“I welcome the many American and Kurdish companies gathered here by the US and Kurdistan chambers of commerce. You have the potential to strengthen an already strong relationship.”
Scores of US companies in various fields, including construction and oil, already operate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
“The secretary, the department of energy, and the entire US government appreciate the critical value of the US-Kurdistan partnership and of energy and US investment in the region,” added Menezes.
“This conference is very important as we continue to build relationships with the United States, Iraq and the Kurds,” said Ross Perot Jr., the chairman of The Perot Companies and Hillwood, who has been working with the KRG in the oil field for several years.
Robert Waller, Consul-General of the US in Erbil, praised the KRG for its support of US enterprise in the Region.
The KRG “warmly welcomes US companies. And in particular I want to commend the steps that the Prime Minister Barzani and his team have taken to help US companies succeed,” said the diplomat.
