Body of Kurdish migrant to be returned home: Refugee foundation
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The body of a Kurdish migrant who died earlier this month will be returned to the Kurdistan Region for burial on Friday, according to the Summit Foundation for Refugee and Displaced Affairs (Lutka).
Fakhraddin Ahmed was on an illegal migration route out of the Kurdistan Region when he died due to a “sudden illness” in Mexico on July 2, said Lutka.
The migrant’s family and relatives were received by the office of Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and Ari Jalal, head of Lutka, on Monday morning. Talabani’s office informed the family that it will facilitate the return of Ahmed’s body in addition to providing them with financial aid.
Ahmed is set to be buried in his hometown of Chamchamal on Friday.
Tens of thousands of people from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region take on perilous routes out of the country towards Europe on a yearly basis in hopes of escaping the endless crises in the country, including the lack of employment, political instability, and corruption.
Over 750,000 people have migrated out of the country since 2015, according to data from Lutka, also recording at least 319 migrant deaths during that period, and adding that the whereabouts of 236 others remain unknown.
