Peshmerga foil ISIS suicide bombers near Mosul, killing two
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Peshmerga forces on Wednesday foiled Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bombers who tried to infiltrate Kurdish lines of defense on the Bashik front, killing two militants.
The would-be bombers had tried to blend in with civilians fleeing fighting in the area.
"At dawn on Wednesday, two ISIS militants with explosive belts tried to attack Peshmerga on the Bashik Mountain. Both of them were killed before they detonated their explosives," Hamid Afandi, commander of the Bashik front, told Rudaw.
"The suicide bombers had hidden themselves among families who surrender to the Peshmerga on a daily basis. Before the attackers reached Peshmerga positions we opened fire on them, setting off their explosives and killing them both,” Afandi explained.
Earlier this month, a number of ISIS suicide bombers also attacked the Peshmerga on the front by taking advantage of foggy weather, but they failed in inflicting harm on the Peshmerga soldiers.
Bashik is the closest Kurdish frontline to Mosul. ISIS has made repeated failed attempts to break through Peshmerga lines on the front.
ISIS militants have recently been suffering a series of setbacks and losses on the battlefield against the Peshmerga. The Iraqi Army and its allied militias are currently pushing toward Fallujah to push ISIS out of the key city.
