ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday condemned the “terrorist attack” on the Khor Mor gas field in the Region's eastern Sulaimani province, calling on federal authorities to intensify efforts and “punish the perpetrators of this crime.”

In a statement, President Nechirvan Barzani said, “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack carried out last night against the Khor Mor field," adding, “this attack targets the economic infrastructure and public services of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and poses a direct threat to the country’s security and stability.”

President Barzani further underlined that “it is the duty and responsibility of the Iraqi Federal Government and the relevant security agencies to take immediate and serious action, implementing necessary and effective measures to pursue and punish the perpetrators of this crime and prevent its recurrence.”

Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province came under a drone attack late Wednesday, causing a blaze which is yet to be controlled. The attack has also caused a partial blackout across the Kurdistan Region.

In an early Thursday statement on X, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the drone attack, also urging Baghdad to find the perpetrators and calling on Washington to provide the Region with the needed defensive equipment to protect “civilian infrastructure.”

“I condemn the cowardly attack on the Khor Mor gas field in the strongest terms and urge the federal government to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” the Premier Barzani said.

“The usual terrorists or whoever may be behind tonight’s attacks cannot be allowed to repeat these crimes or be released on bail, as in the past,” he added.

Located in Chamchamal district, Khor Mor gas field is operated by Pearl Petroleum, a consortium that includes UAE-based Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum.

Dana Gas reported Thursday that production at the facility has been suspended after the site “was struck by a rocket attack” late Wednesday, confirming that “no injuries to personnel were recorded.”

The Khor Mor field has come under numerous rocket and drone attacks in recent years, and the Kurdish authorities have blamed Iran-backed armed groups.

A drone on the field in April last year killed four Yemeni nationals, temporarily suspending production and disrupting electricity across the Kurdistan Region.

Prime Minister Barzani on Thursday urged “our American and international partners to provide the defensive equipment necessary to protect our civilian infrastructure, and to support us in taking serious action to deter these attacks on our people and our progress.”
