ERBIL, Kurdistan Region- At least three mass graves were discovered in Shingal on Friday, and several more are expected to be discovered, said Mahma Khalil, the city’s mayor.

“On Friday three mass graves were discovered in Shingal containing the remains of 113 Kurdish Yezidis,” Khalil told Rudaw.

He added, “One of the graves was planted with explosives and we did not let anyone get closer until the bomb disposal team arrived and cleaned the area.”

After Shingal’s liberation from the Islamic State earlier this month, two mass graves have been discovered - one containing the remains of 80 Yezidi women and the other containing 50 Yezidi men.

Qasim Simo, head of Shingal security, had told Rudaw there are at least 15 mass graves in the area, and thousands of Yezidi women and children are still missing.
