ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday condemned a drone attack on the residence of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok, reiterating the Gulf state’s “unwavering support” for the Region and Iraq, according to Kurdistan Region Presidency.
The UAE leader “offered a strong condemnation” of the attack and reaffirmed the UAE’s “unwavering support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in preserving their security and stability,” according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
The residence of President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok province was targeted by a drone attack on Saturday, without resulting in any casualties. No party has claimed the attack at the time of writing.
President Barzani expressed gratitude for the call and for the UAE’s “ongoing backing of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.”
“The two leaders also turned their attention to the broader regional situation, discussing recent developments stemming from the ongoing war and aligning on the urgent need to advance efforts toward ending the conflict and achieving lasting peace and stability,” the statement added.
Iraqi and Kurdish political blocs and leaders widely condemned the attack. Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) denied involvement and also condemned the attack.
The Kurdistan Region was targeted by several drone strikes on Saturday, nearly a week after an Iranian ballistic missile attack killed six Peshmerga fighters and wounded 30 others in Erbil’s Soran district.
The UAE’s foreign ministry also issued a statement “strongly” condemning the attack, and “expressing its regret over this heinous attack.”
The ministry affirmed “the UAE's full solidarity” with President Barzani and his family, as well as with the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.
“The Ministry also expressed its strong condemnation of these criminal acts, reiterating its unwavering rejection of all forms of violence aimed at undermining security and stability,” the statement read.
The Kurdistan Region has for weeks been caught in the crosshairs of the Iran-Israel-US conflict, with Iraqi pro-Iran armed groups aligned with the Tehran-led “Axis of Resistance” carrying out more than 460 strikes on alleged American targets in the Region since the onset of the conflict on February 28, according to Rudaw tracking.
The assaults have continued despite repeated assurances from Kurdish leaders that the Region is not a party to the conflict and will not allow its territory to be used as a launchpad for attacks against neighboring countries, including Iran.
