Drivers with European plates have 10 days to register undocumented cars
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Vehicles with European plates and no documents brought into Erbil can be registered with Iraqi plates in early August after paying set fees.
“We are informing the people of Erbil and its surroundings that starting from Wednesday, the implementation of the No. 1 [decree] of the year of 2017 from the Interior Ministry, which is particular to the European and undocumented vehicles, will begin,” Fazil Haji, the spokesperson of the Erbil Traffic Department, told Rudaw.
Haji added this decision applies for all vehicle models manufactured after the year 2000.
Their registration will start from August 2 to August 12, he explained.
He also advised the owner of the vehicles to bring all the documents with them. The underlying condition to register these vehicles is that their owner must hold an Erbil Information Card.
For any four piston sized vehicles, some 600,000 Iraqi dinars (IQD) will be taken in fees for registration and bearing plates. For six piston cars, 1.4 million IQD is required. And for eight piston vehicles more than 1.5 million IQD is required.
There is no official data published by the Erbil Traffic Department on the number of European and undocumented vehicles in the Kurdistan Region, Haji told Rudaw.
Since the start of 2017, automobile sales in the Kurdistan Region have increased by 67 percent compared to last year totaling 26,500 cars sold over the period according to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Proper plating of vehicles allows police and security officials to monitor driving and enforce traffic laws. The prevalence of speed cameras and traffic police at most major intersections require visible and registered license plates.
