American Corner invites all to join activities leading up to Women’s Day
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The American Corner Erbil Hub located at the University of Kurdistan Hewler (UKH) is inviting the community to join in on daily activities leading up to this Thursday’s main event for International Women’s Day.
“The university has always celebrated it very well but as American Corner, we’re supporting them in that we’re doing a program every day on one aspect of women’s progress,” Lesley Gaj, Director of the UKH Library and American Corner Erbil, told Rudaw English.
“We have speakers coming in from the UN, from the embassy themselves, local organizations, NGOs as well as discussion panels going on,” she added.
Starting on Sunday and running through Thursday various activities, including movie screenings, book readings, panel discussions and presentations will take place in the American Corner located at the UKH library between 2 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.
Gaj said that some of the topics related to women’s progress will include women in business, women in health and gender parity issues, “so it’s a lead up to it and to feed into it [International Women’s Day].”
On Thursday, the American Corner will hold a special art exhibition showcasing women’s art following this year’s theme, #PressForProgress, entitled “Celebration for Women Progress in Kurdistan” which will be held between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the foyer of the UKH auditorium.
Additional activities on Thursday include a book reading between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the American corner along with a “Women in Kurdistan” Gala Event to be held between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the UKH auditorium.
International Women’s Day has been held annually for well over a century to celebrate women’s achievements internationally throughout history, and with global movements fighting for women’s equality such as #MeToo and #TimesUp, people across the world are striving for equal rights.
"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights,” world-renowned feminist, activist and journalist, Gloria Steinem, said in a 2012 documentary.
