Updated: Two dead in Erbil hotel fire

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Two people have died after a fire broke out in a hotel in Erbil city on Wednesday morning.

One person died at the scene. He was identified as the son of the hotel owner. A second person, a hotel worker, was critically injured. Fire department officials confirmed to Rudaw on Wednesday evening that the second person has now died of their injuries.

The fire broke out at Erbil View Hotel, located on 30 Meters Street at about 8:30 a.m., Shwan Abdulqadir, the chief of Erbil Fire Department, told Rudaw.

The fire was caused by an electrical failure, causing a fuel tank to explode, he said.

The explosion occurred on the rooftop.

Although the hotel has fire escape ladders, they are not linked to the rooftop, Abdulqadir said.

The worker jumped from the top of the building, falling onto a car that was parked in front of the hotel.

Abdulqadir explained that the hotel did not follow regulations, citing that the fuel tank was not in the proper place.

He said that authorities will take legal measures against places that are found in breach of safety regulations.
