Golf buggies to help Erbil citadel visitors skirt traffic ban for free
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Golf buggies provided by Erbil municipality will transport locals around the citadel for free amid the coronavirus-related traffic ban.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) imposed a lockdown on March 14 due to the spread of COVID-19 in the Region. While traffic is now allowed during the day, people are still not allowed to drive around the citadel.
Nabaz Abdulhamid, head of Erbil municipality, told Rudaw that the buggies can be used to visit the citadel from 11am to 5pm.
“They are free of charge and operate as per traffic rules. If we see that we need more, we can increase the number in the future,” he added.
According to the official, the idea was coined to help the elderly and disabled get around the area.
With Erbil residents looking for alternative ways of getting around, bicycle wholesalers say the price of their goods have doubled.
“Previously, demand was mostly on small bicycles used by children. However, demand for bicycles used by grown ups increased and our stock houses ran out of them,” bicycle wholesaler Mohammed Ahmed told Rudaw.
